Wicking Bed Kit. Plastic bin liner with
diverting hose and infill.
A "Wicking
Garden" is a passive watering system. Water is held in the base
of the Magic Square Garden and is naturally drawn up into the plants
root zone.
A Wicking Garden will save water and heaps of time
watering. Check this
article from Michael Green in The Age, Domain. Yes, we installed
Frank Fisher's gardens, in fact Frank's beds were our first wicking
beds.

Possum Proof tent. Nothing like a week at the
Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show to teach us the damage
Possums can do in no time at all (and they have a taste for HOT
Chillis). To cheat the Possums we have
developed a remarkably simple yet attractive bird netting tent to
keep pests out; Possums, White Butterflys, birds, puppies... |

Don't accept my word!
Dear Peter,
I have my first square garden underway and
have almost filled the second box ready for planting. The first thing I
learnt was after filling the fist box with soil, compost, manure and potting
mix etc I should have let it settle before planting. It looks great and
everything is growing wonderfully but it has settled lower into the box than
I anticipated.
The second thing I noticed is that EVERYBODY
loves my square gardens. They are hardly a garden 'feature 'but my placement
in my garden has had very positive results and caused much discussion with
family on how they can be incorporated into their garden area as well. My
father has had a backyard veggie patch forever and now at 82 it is getting a
bit much for him. He hasn't been to see mine yet but both mum and my sister
are keen for him to consider them and save his back. (he had a back
operation last Nov and another scheduled for next Monday)
The kids love them. My sister offered to get
them for Miss 10yo and Miss 14yo next Christmas. Mr 2yo couldn't wait to
take scoops of dirt and help Pa fill the box, don't worry we didn't let him
near the potting mix. He is a bit small so we made him a ground level bed
and he planted beans. He was devastated that they hadn't grown by the time
mum came to pick him up but he has been back to water them and tell them to
"wake-up baby beans'. He is waiting eagerly for the strawberries to ripen
and eat them off the bush. Mr 2yo has also surreptitiously been observed
singing and dancing for the garden to make it grow. (and he hasn't even
heard of Prince Charles)
Cheers
